Diptychs have a long history dating in popularity back to the ancient world. Today the term can be used figuratively to refer to two thematically-linked works – never actually connected, but in conversation as a pair. Encouraging students to contemplate potential symbolism within a frame, we began to analyze the diptych as a building block to enhanced meaning. By adding another layer of communication/interaction between two images, the viewer is able to make connections. The idea of creating relationships and dialogue between two Images became the focus of this investigation. Images can be linked through similarity and dissimilarity, through visual and architectural tone, subject matter and mood.
